Head of Agency – NAMIC Insurance Agency

The National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies – Insurance Agency has an opening for a Head of Agency in its Indianapolis, IN office. The person in this role will lead NAMIC Insurance Agency (NIA) in staff supervision, new business generation, existing business and cross-selling, and oversight/development of processes for production and delivery of insurance products/services.

Essential Functions/ Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Supervises NIA staff, serving as the public-facing head of the agency and providing leadership in accomplishing agency business goals/objectives.
  • Serves as lead account management representative, providing consultative advice on NIA accounts and prospective accounts.
  • Drives new business production through development and supervision of cross selling to existing accounts, maintenance of existing and creation of new brokered business relationships, and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders. 
  • Oversees processes and workflow for new and renewal quotes for customers of NIA and the processing of customer payments to NIA and ordering policy issuance from carriers.
  • Provides customer service support or service where needed (e.g. handling complex questions, new or larger client accounts) with analysis and knowledge to help address risk and insurance needs or requests from customers and to promote retention of current coverages and additional or expanded coverages where appropriate.
  • Manages NIA external compliance, which includes obtaining/maintaining agents/agency licenses; annual state insurance department form filings/ fees; filings, registrations and related requirements for NAMIC Purchasing Group; and internal compliance with agency procedures and policies (using internal audits where appropriate).
  • Participates in evaluation and development of carrier relationships and/or appointments with carriers to be represented by NIA.
  • Works with General Counsel and marketing staff to create marketing and operations budget and financial goals.   Monitor monthly and quarterly results. Maintain related reports.

Qualifications include:

  • Active Indiana property/casualty insurance agent license with a willingness to become licensed in additional jurisdictions. 
  • Experience with professional liability products/coverages.
  • Past managerial and sales experience preferred.
  • College degree, or equivalent experience in related business.
  • Membership in the Professional Liability Underwriting Society (PLUS), Indiana Association of Professional Insurance Agents, and/or Indiana Association of Independent Insurance Agents a plus.
  • Minimum five years’ experience in brokerage or excess/surplus lines business.
  • Ability to travel occasionally by both air and car, including some overnight travel.
  • Ability to successfully pass a criminal background and MVR check.

AVP – Federal Affairs

The National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (NAMIC) has an opening for a lobbyist in it’s Washington D.C. office. This position will represent NAMIC before Congress and federal agencies on the issues impacting property/casualty insurance companies, with a special emphasis on the House Financial Services Committee.

Essential Functions/ Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Manages issues portfolio by developing issue briefs, talking points and legislative strategies on all issues assigned.
  • Maintains regular communications with other DC insurance representatives and members of the financial services community.
  • Works closely with NAMIC standing committees and task forces.
  • Assists legislative team in advancing all priority issues with lawmakers.
  • Lobbies members of Congress and their staff on legislation on behalf of NAMIC and its member companies; builds and maintain strong relationships with key members of the House and Senate and their staff.
  • Develops and executes political strategy for NAMIC PAC alongside SVP of Federal & Political Affairs.
  • Escorts member company representatives participating in Congressional Contact Program, NAMIC’s grassroots fly-in.
  • Represents NAMIC at fundraising events.
  • Represents NAMIC with appropriate government agencies.
  • Identifies opportunities to report advocacy news to members through written, electronic and oral presentations.
  • Writes and develops regular NAMIC member and Capitol Hill communications including: issue briefs and fact sheets, member and grassroots alerts.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities needed include:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Self-motivation and strong personal initiative.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
  • Professional demeanor.
  • Understanding of property/casualty insurance issues a plus.

Qualifications include:

  • 5-7 years of relevant work experience on Capitol Hill or equivalent in the private sector.
  • Familiarity with major Congressional committees of jurisdiction preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Ability to travel periodically as required.
  • Ability to successfully pass a criminal background check.

Policy Director – Market Regulation and Workers Compensation

The National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (NAMIC) has a full-time remote opportunity for a Policy Director – Market Regulation and Workers Compensation. This position effectively advocates the membership’s interests through written communication and oral testimony, coordinates with public policy division on issue development, and serves as an ‘in-department’ market conduct and regulation expert to drive NAMIC’s initiatives around workers compensation.

Responsibilities for this position include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Serves as a Subject Matter Expert on legislative and regulatory developments at all levels of government and as a resource for NAMIC Federal & State Affairs staff and member company staff.
  • Serves as an integral part of the NAMIC Public Policy Team to ensure comprehensive issue coverage in conjunction with all Federal & State Affairs advocates.
  • Manages market regulation, workers compensation issue portfolios and related member engagement. Assists in management of data privacy portfolio of issues and serves as second policy issue expert.
  • Develops issue management and expertise as needed in emerging insurance issues.
  • Establishes and maintains positive contacts with insurance regulators to advocate NAMIC’s strategic regulatory objectives; serves as an active, visible industry representative at the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.
  • Identifies and develops emerging market issues of priority to member companies.
  • Develops position papers, testimonies, and other advocacy pieces on issues of expertise as needed.
  • Communicates on relevant issues to NAMIC membership in an effective, readily understandable manner through oral presentations, written articles, issue briefs, NAMIC web content, or other relevant NAMIC media publications.

Qualifications include:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience working in insurance regulation or market regulation on behalf of the insurance industry.
  • Familiarity with the property/casualty insurance industry required.
  • Experience in issue management pertaining to market regulation and workers compensation required.
  • Prior experience in advocacy before government organizations preferred.
  • Familiarity with trade associations preferred.
  • Flexibility to travel on an “as needed” basis, up to about 30 percent of the time.
  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree.
  • Ability to successfully pass a criminal background check.
